No, that isn't a defect in the photo, running up the side of the mountain. It's a fault, running almost vertically, giving witness to the uphevals in this region over geologic time.

The castellated ramparts of this mountian tell a story of layers of hard and soft rock withstanding the action of eons of rain, snow, and ice.

We find, to our discomfort, that the park has closed the lower path that skirts the lake shore. It's overused, so they require that we take the more arduous upper path. Then it begins to rain. The NWS, only 14 hours before, had predicted sunny skies and warm temperatures. So here we were, with no rain gear, I with no coat, and no Tilly hat. Brrr... In the high resolution version of this picture, you can actually see the rain falling against the darker trees. Kathie and I were standing under a big one to avoid much of the rain.

Kathie found some interesting tree moss growing in the tree that was sheltering us.

After reaching the falls, we were both cold and tired. Rather than walk back, we chose to ride on the boat. Expensive, but it replaced a 2.5 hour hike with a 6 minute ride. The views were pretty good, too.
